Waking Up Written by Daniel Barton I have a window on my door I can see lots of green lines They make lots of small squares Outside the hall is shiny white The floor is too And the ceiling That’s covered in something bubbly and wavy Mummy calls it “R-Tex” My door is white too But it doesn’t shine like the white outside Mummy made the smiling men paint my walls blue three sleeps ago She said they go with all my flowers and cards I remember them painting it The smiling men came and made everything blue and gave me lots of hugs The floor is still shiny white I want the fluffy blue one with red patterns from my bedroom at home Mummy said I can’t have that though She cried when I asked her why not Mummy said I was sleeping for a long time I don’t feel like I had a big sleep Mummy said I slept from one birthday to the next That means I will be eight in just twenty sleeps The talking man is coming here today He always asks me lots of questions He likes to ask me if I’m happy And he always asks if I can remember what happened before my big sleep I try and try but I can’t There’s a bad man inside my head who makes me scream if I think too much I don’t want to scream It makes me cry Mummy cries too when I cry She holds my hand and tells me it’s all ok I asked mummy why my sister didn’t come to see me We had a big fight before my sleep I hope she knows I’m not mad anymore It’s ok that she lost my hat I miss my sister Mummy said daddy made her go to heaven She said that god came and took him away while I had my big sleep She said God was angry at daddy for making my sister go to heaven Mummy said you’re supposed to only go there when god tells you too The smiling man will be here soon He always gives me stuff that makes me sleepy He says I have to take it or I might hurt myself I don’t think I will hurt myself I want to go outside and play today I wonder if mummy will bring me a sweet today Or maybe an ice cream instead |
